Open Question: How are politics viewed in the South?

I'm moving to Mississippi from Iowa. I'm just curious how things will be in the Deep South. I see that Mississippi as well as most of the Southeast voted Republican in the 2008 election. I'm guessing there will be a lot of Republicans around in Mississippi. I'm not used to that: I've lived in Iowa and Minnesota which are pretty liberal for the most part.
